Mātai Moana – A Vision for the Future of Our Whenua

Mātai Moana is a powerful reminder of what’s possible when we live in harmony with the land – as our tūpuna once did, and as our mokopuna deserve to do.

As highlighted in our 4 April Te Kawekawea and across our social media channels, Taranaki Whānui is proposing that the 74-hectare block of land known as Mātai Moana be vested as a reserve, ensuring its protection for future generations. This when
ua, rich with the legacy of our tūpuna includes pā sites, wāhi tapu, and other significant historical structures that tell the enduring story of our people. It speaks to our whakapapa and deep connection to this land.

Under our proposal, Taranaki Whānui and Wellington City Council would become joint stewards of Mātai Moana – working together to restore, protect, and uphold the mana and mouri of this sacred tūpuna whenua.

This is a vision grounded in tikanga, kaitiakitanga, and collective responsibility. To bring this vision to life, we need the backing of our people, civic leaders, and all who call Te Whanganui-a-Tara home.
