Expression of Interest: Mana Whenua Steering Group (MWSG) Appointments

Overview

Taranaki Whānui ki Te Upoko o Te Ika, in partnership with Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency, invites Expressions of Interest from experienced uri to join the Mana Whenua Steering Group (MWSG).

This is a single appointment process covering both projects — applicants may express interest in one or both. The MWSG will strengthen partnership between mana whenua, Waka Kotahi and Ngāti Toa Rangatira, ensuring that Taranaki Whānui values, tikanga, and aspirations are embedded throughout each project.

 

About the Projects

  • State Highway 1 (Wellington Improvements) – delivering the second Mount Victoria and Terrace Tunnels, and Basin Reserve upgrades to unlock regional growth.
  • Petone to Grenada Link Road – creating a critical east–west connection between Porirua and the Hutt Valley to improve resilience, connectivity, and housing growth.

 

Role and Purpose

The MWSG provides strategic oversight, cultural leadership, and guidance to ensure mana whenua aspirations, values, and interests are reflected across all phases of the projects.

Members will:

  • Attend regular hui (monthly, moving to quarterly).
  • Provide advice and direction that upholds Taranaki Whānui values.
  • Work collaboratively with iwi, Waka Kotahi, and project teams.
  • Ensure tikanga and kawa are consistently applied.

Remuneration is aligned with NZTA’s Koha and Payments for Advice and Cultural Services Policy.

 

Who We’re Looking For

We welcome EOIs from uri who can demonstrate:

  • Political nous, governance, and collaborative leadership experience.
  • Knowledge and advocacy for te taiao (whenua, moana, awa).
  • Strong grounding in Taranaki Whānui tikanga and reo.
  • Mokopuna-focused, tūpuna-guided decision making.
  • Experience in infrastructure or complex project delivery.

Tangata Tiaki – Matiu Island and Across the Takiwā

Overview

Taranaki Whānui ki Te Upoko o Te Ika is seeking a dedicated uri to join our team as Tangata Tiaki — a role representing kaitiakitanga, manaakitanga, and rangatiratanga across our takiwā, with a priority focus on Matiu Island.

This role provides a visible and enduring presence of Taranaki Whānui, reconnecting uri with our whenua, protecting taonga species, and upholding tikanga in partnership with agencies such as the Department of Conservation.

 

About the Role

As Tangata Tiaki, you will:

  • Lead and support wānanga, noho, and iwi reconnection activities.
  • Uphold tikanga and provide cultural guidance to staff, partners, and manuhiri.
  • Support biodiversity, heritage, and taiao restoration work.
  • Represent Taranaki Whānui in welcoming and guiding visitors to Matiu Island.
  • Contribute to island operations, including biosecurity, maintenance, and conservation projects.

 

This is a hands-on, culturally grounded role that brings to life the aspirations of the Kaitiaki Plan, ensuring Taranaki Whānui presence and leadership are sustained for generations to come.

  • Passion for conservation, biodiversity, or taiao restoration.
  • Confident communicator who builds positive relationships across iwi, community, and government partners.

Taranaki Whānui Ki Te Upoko O Te Ika – Notice To Uri 

RE-OFFER FROM KĀINGA ORA (HOUSING NEW ZEALAND LIMITED) 

 

Kāinga Ora has contacted us offering the opportunity to purchase the following properties: 

  1. 14 Galway Street, Waterloo, Lower Hutt 
  2. 16 Galway Street, Waterloo, Lower Hutt 
  3. 73 Homebush Road, Khandallah, Wellington 

These properties are available for purchase through Taranaki Whānui Limited (TWL) as nominee for the Trust on the following terms: 

  1. TWL will have sole discretion to accept any offer from members as it will be nominating on behalf the Trust. 
  2. The Trust/TWL do not currently own these properties but can arrange their purchase provided suitable terms can be agreed. 
  3. The Trust/TWL are not charging any commission. 
  4. Offers must be unconditional in all respects and made in writing. 
  5. All offers or requests for further information must be sent to Kirsty Tamanui at kirsty@portnicholson.org.nz by close of business on 1 November.  
  6. Settlement is 25 working days from the date that the agreement between the Trust and KO becomes unconditional.
