Upholding the Mana of Parangarehu

Taranaki Whānui is seeking an uri to represent our iwi on Rōpū Tiaki — the co-management group responsible for protecting and restoring the Parangarehu Lakes (Kohangapiripiri, Kohangatera) in partnership with Greater Wellington Regional Council.

This is a unique opportunity to uphold the tikanga, kōrero tuku iho, and environmental values of Taranaki Whānui, while reconnecting our uri with these culturally and ecologically significant places.

 

About Rōpū Tiaki

Established in 2012 and reformed in 2016, Rōpū Tiaki is a co-management body made up of:

  • Three uri of Taranaki Whānui ki Te Upoko o Te Ika
  • Three Greater Wellington Regional Council biodiversity and parks staff

Together, they carry a 500-year vision for Parangarehu, grounded in partnership, restoration, and intergenerational stewardship.

 

Role Summary

As a representative, you’ll:

  • Attend monthly meetings (2–3 hrs, remunerated)
  • Provide advice and input between meetings (approx. 2 hrs/month)
  • Help guide environmental and cultural programmes
  • Lead and support uri engagement and reconnection with Parangarehu
  • Represent Taranaki Whānui values, stories, and aspirations


We’re Looking For Someone Who:

✅ Has strong grounding in tikanga, reo, and whakapapa
✅ Is confident in cultural leadership and engagement
✅ Has experience or interest in conservation or environmental restoration
✅ Is committed to working outdoors and reconnecting uri to whenua
✅ Embodies kaitiakitanga, manaakitanga, and rangatiratanga

Taranaki Whānui Ki Te Upoko O Te Ika – Notice To Uri 

RE-OFFER FROM KĀINGA ORA (HOUSING NEW ZEALAND LIMITED) 

 

Kāinga Ora has contacted us offering the opportunity to purchase the following properties: 

  1. 14 Galway Street, Waterloo, Lower Hutt 
  2. 16 Galway Street, Waterloo, Lower Hutt 
  3. 73 Homebush Road, Khandallah, Wellington 

These properties are available for purchase through Taranaki Whānui Limited (TWL) as nominee for the Trust on the following terms: 

  1. TWL will have sole discretion to accept any offer from members as it will be nominating on behalf the Trust. 
  2. The Trust/TWL do not currently own these properties but can arrange their purchase provided suitable terms can be agreed. 
  3. The Trust/TWL are not charging any commission. 
  4. Offers must be unconditional in all respects and made in writing. 
  5. All offers or requests for further information must be sent to Kirsty Tamanui at kirsty@portnicholson.org.nz by close of business on 1 November.  
  6. Settlement is 25 working days from the date that the agreement between the Trust and KO becomes unconditional. 
  7. Copies of the draft sale and purchase terms can be made available on request.

All offers to purchase any of the three properties must be received by 1 November 2025 and be unconditional in all respects.  The Trust will nominate the successful member as purchaser under the agreement from KO.
